Resurrecting a dead computer using a puppy

So your trusty computer seems to have bit the dust.  Maybe your hard drive failed, maybe something went horribly wrong with Windows, or maybe you just can't figure out what the hell is wrong.

If the computer at least has power going to it, and as long as it's not beeping incessantly when you try to turn it on, chances are you can get it back up and running with a nifty little program called Puppy Linux.  It's free, and it turns quite a few useless machines into usable computers in no time.

First - what Puppy is: it's an operating system, much like the Windows XP/Vista most are used to using, that runs off a CD or a USB drive.  It doesn't need to access a hard drive at all, which makes this perfect for computer problems involving a bad hard drive or a messed up Windows installation.  It's a version of Linux (obviously); a safe operating system that is less prone to virus and malware infection.  Some versions of Linux are much more "technical" than Windows, but this version is easy to use for most everyone.

What it isn't: Puppy isn't Windows.  It isn't exactly like the computer screen you're used to, though it's close.  Not every program out there works on Linux, so you may not be able to play some games or run certain programs.  This isn't a long-term solution for every computer user.  It also doesn't fix the underlying computer problem.  If your hard drive is toast, Puppy won't magically fix it.  You've got to take care of that on your own.

When Andy's computer suddenly crapped out Sunday afternoon, I went through the usual steps I take to try and fix a messed up computer.  I opened it up and made sure everything was plugged in where it was supposed to be, I checked to see if any parts were running too hot, I unplugged and replugged some parts, and we still had a computer that wouldn't start Windows.  After doing some other technical stuff involving the BIOS, I conceded that Windows XP was probably corrupted.  It took about an hour to check everything I wanted to check and at that point I grabbed a CD with Puppy Linux on it.  I put that in his CD drive, had the computer boot from the disc, and a few minutes later Andy was surfing the web.  Now he's able to use his computer for most everyday tasks like using the internet while I work on determining exactly what the problem is (with help from my supergenius friend Michael, who knows how to fix any computer problem on the planet).

What you should do right now:
Download a copy of Puppy Linux.  Even if you may never need to use it, it's free and it doesn't hurt to keep a copy on hand just in case.  You can download it directly to a thumb drive if you have one (and they're so cheap anymore it's not a bad idea), or you can download it to your computer and put it on a CD.
If you're going to put it on a CD, you need to use burning software to do so.  Active ISO Burner is free and works just fine.  That's what I use.  Install Active ISO, download Puppy, put a CD in your CD drive, open Active ISO, and drag the Puppy file right onto the Active ISO screen.  It will take several minutes, but it'll load that baby right onto the CD.  Once it's done, put the CD in a case, label the case so you know what it is, and put it somewhere safe in case you ever need it.

What to do if your computer craps out:
Dig up that Puppy CD or thumb drive.  Put the CD or thumb drive into your computer.
Try to turn on your computer.  As soon as the fans start whirring, hit the DEL key or the F2 key (depending on your computer) repeatedly until a screen comes up that says something about BIOS at the top.
Use your arrow keys to navigate over to the Boot menu and press Enter.
This will bring up a screen that allows you to change where your computer tries to boot (start) from - you'll see options like Hard Drive, CD-ROM Drive, Removable Devices, and so on.
At this point you'll want to change the first option on the list to whatever type of media you have Puppy on.  If you made a CD, change the first item on the list to CD-ROM Drive.  If you put it on a thumb drive, change the first item to Removable Devices.
When you've changed it so the first item on the list is CD-ROM Drive or Removable Devices, press the F10 key to save your changes and exit this screen. A screen will come up asking to confirm that you want to save and exit; choose Yes. You can change all of this back later as needed - just follow the same directions above to make Hard Drive the first choice on the list.
Your computer should restart itself now - just let it do its thing.  Instead of the normal screen you're used to when the computer starts, you'll get a screen similar to the image at the beginning of this post: a cute cartoon puppy head.  That's Puppy Linux starting, and if you see that you're in good shape!
Let Puppy start up (it takes a few minutes the first time you use it) and once it's loaded it will walk you through setting the time zones and the graphics settings with a few on-screen prompts.  It's very simple.
Next, look for a globe icon on the desktop; it should be labeled as Browse or HTML or something similar depending on which version of Puppy you're using.  Click on that once (everything is single-click in Puppy, which takes some getting used to), and it will walk you through getting connected to the internet.

In no more than 10 minutes, you should have gone from a dead computer to a working computer that's connected to the internet.  Now you can search online for help on determining what your exact computer problem is, or you can look for the nearest computer shop so you can take your machine in to be fixed.
The best part, in my opinion, is that if you're looking at an expensive problem and you're on a budget, or if you can't get the machine fixed right away for whatever reason, Puppy will allow you to use your computer until you can get the repairs done.  In many cases, it will also allow you to retrieve files from your hard drive (assuming your hard drive itself didn't crash & burn) and move them to a thumb drive so you don't risk losing important or sentimental data like photos, music, spreadsheets, etc.

Puppy desktop - it's quite similar to Windows and you shouldn't have any trouble navigating it!

Puppy won't resurrect every dead computer.  If it won't power up at all, take the computer to a professional for help.  If you can't even get the BIOS screen to load, take it to a shop or a knowledgeable friend.  Some problems like a bad power supply are even beyond Puppy's abilities.  In many cases, though, this free piece of software will at least provide a temporary solution to major computer issues.  Now go download Puppy!

Walgreens free photo collages: now live

Walgreens is offering their 8x10 photo collage for FREE again.  I got one about a month ago and it's really very nice.  Pair it with a cute frame for a great holiday gift!

This time around, you can get TWO for free with the two coupon codes available!

Just go to the Walgreens site, register a free account if you don't have one already, and upload your photos.
Create your collage and choose in-store pickup.  When you check out, use coupon code THANKSGIVING or BFCOLLAGE to bring your total to my favorite number: $0.00!  When you choose store pickup there's no shipping charged so you'll only have to worry about any applicable sales tax.  I wasn't charged tax last time, but be prepared to pay a few cents just in case.

You may have to place two separate orders to be able to use both codes.

Tiny Prints - on the free Thanksgiving cards deal

Last week I posted about a giveaway TinyPrints.com was running on their line of Thanksgiving cards.  There's good news and there's bad news.

The good news: my first order arrived this morning.  These cards are GORGEOUS.  I'm absolutely stunned that they sent these completely free with no strings attached.  The card quality is as good as, if not better than, the cards you buy in the store; better yet, even at regular pricing this is a better deal than Hallmark.  Since the cards can be completely customized with photos, names, and your own words - AND mailed directly to the recipient for the cost of a stamp - with just a few clicks, the value involved blows store-bought out of the water.  A Hallmark is, what, $2 in the store?  You've got a limited choice of images, a limited choice of sentiments, and you have to address and mail the thing yourself.  For the same price or less, TinyPrints.com takes care of the mailing in addition to printing the exact card you want with your images and your words.  Their site is bookmarked and I'll be using them to send birthday and other greeting cards from here on out.

The bad news: people see "FREE" and they go apeshit.  TinyPrints.com posted a blog entry yesterday explaining how their generous offer went horribly wrong.
First, it was disheartening to find out how many customers took advantage of the offer in an abusive way. It wasn’t even close to the majority of our customers, but enough people abused the offer to really sour the spirit of what we were trying to do. In just one of several disappointing examples, we had someone try to order 20,000 free Thanksgiving cards with the intent of reselling them.
Uggggh.  Twenty thousand cards.  TWENTY THOUSAND.  That's $40,000+ worth of product that some jackwagon expected TinyPrints to eat just so they could turn around and sell the cards to put money in their own pocket.  Being a small business owner myself, I understand the need to get the best deal possible when considering business expenses.  That isn't getting a good deal for your business.  Trying to order 20,000 promotional greeting cards for resale is stealing from another small business' pocket to put money in yours.  It makes me sick.

I trust that you, my dear readers, were human enough to only order a reasonable number of cards last week.  My rant isn't directed at you.

If you took advantage of TinyPrint's promotion and are pleased with the quality of the cards, consider using them the next time you have a birthday card to send.
If you didn't, I'm giving them a ringing endorsement that these cards are well worth spending actual money on.  Give 'em a shot.

Free Thanksgiving/fall greeting cards - limited time!

**OFFER EXPIRED**

Over at TinyPrints.com, they're offering FREE customized Thanksgiving cards including FREE shipping to you.  Not sure how long this deal will last, so it'd be worthwhile to jump on it now.

Go to TinyPrints.com and choose one (or more) Thanksgiving/fall themed card from this collection.
Customize the text how you want and add any photos.
Adjust the quantity to the number you need.  Don't go overboard, people.  You don't need 500 cards.  Be reasonable with this generous offer.
Verify everything is okay and proceed to checkout.
At checkout, select the option to have the cards sent to you and add the promo code FREETHX which will take your total to zero.
Complete checkout and hope you ordered in enough time to receive them!

I ordered a few to place on the Thanksgiving table, and I placed a second order for a set of different cards (Fearful Foods) which I modified a little to act as our holiday cards this year.

I've not ordered from TinyPrints before, but since no credit card was required to take advantage of this offer I felt fine about trying them out.  If I don't get the cards, I'm not out anything.  If I do get them, I'll have some fantastic freebies!

EDIT: Did a little more digging.  This offer is good through 11:59PM tomorrow, 11/19/10.  Customer service verified that this is a legit offer and that they'll be sending the FREE cards to those who order (within reason).  There's technically no upper limit on the number that can be ordered but, as always, please be reasonable!
You can also have individual cards sent to individual addresses for a cost of $.44ea, the cost of a stamp.  Consider this option if you have friends or family out of town.  What a nice surprise this would be in their mailbox!
I also checked some reviews of TinyPrints' products and according to those reviews these are nice quality items on heavy card stock.  I'm really looking forward to receiving mine!

Free toothbrushes and floss at Walgreens next week

Starting Sunday, 11/7, Walgreens will have Reach Crystal Clean toothbrushes and 55yd Reach floss on sale for $.99 with the coupon you'll find in the weekly circular.  There's a limit of 3 items per transaction.

Go to coupons.com to print out coupons for $1 off any Reach toothbrush and $1 off any Reach floss.  On the left side of the page, choose "Personal Care" and you may need to click forward to page 2 or three to find the coupons.
You can print two of each coupon per computer; if you've got multiple computers, print two of each from each computer!

Go to Walgreens any time next week.  Pick up a sales circular from the front of the store on your way in - pick up a couple if you're doing more than one transaction.
Get your toothbrushes and floss.  Remember, three items per transaction at the $.99 price, though you can do as many transactions as your store allows.  Make sure you grab the right items - get the 55yd floss and the Crystal Clean toothbrush, don't go messing around getting other types.  They won't work.
When you check out, hand the cashier the $1 coupons first, then hand over the $.99 Walgreens coupon from the circular.  $1 will come off each item, then when the store coupon is scanned it'll take off the difference between the regular price and $.99 for each item.  You only need one Walgreens store coupon per transaction.
Free stuff!  You only have to pay any applicable sales tax.

There will also be a store coupon for $.99 holiday themed oven mitts and kitchen towels.  I'm particularly excited about that because I'm weird and I collect oven mitts.

As always, if the brushes and/or floss aren't in stock, get a raincheck!  Make sure the raincheck reflects the $.99 price.  The Reach coupons I printed don't expire until 2/11 so you'd have plenty of time to take advantage of this deal!

Great freebie for the holidays

Walgreens is offering a FREE 8x10 collage photo through 10/23.

Just go to the Walgreens site, register a free account if you don't have one already, and upload your photos.
Create your collage and choose in-store pickup.  When you check out, use coupon code 8X10TREAT to bring your total to my favorite number: $0.00!  When you choose store pickup there's no shipping charged so you'll only have to worry about any applicable sales tax.

Pair this with a cute picture frame - you can always find these on clearance as the holidays approach! - and you've got the perfect gift for Mom, Grandma, or anyone else who loves photo memories.

And you can't beat the price!

Hello UPS man!!

WHOA!!!  New favorite company!!

Last month I made a post suggesting that new (and seasoned!) couponers might like to consider contacting companies whose products they enjoy, as many companies will reward your brand loyalty with further coupons.  This is a great way to score coupons for a free item, coupons with very long expiration dates, coupons for items that don't get coupons often, or higher-value coupons than one sees in a Sunday paper.

A recent example for me is for Angel Soft toilet paper.  I don't much care what brand we use as long as it's not scratchy or rough, but Andy only wants Angel Soft.  He's very brand-loyal when it comes to his butt.  They don't put out many coupons in the paper for this brand, so I dropped Angel Soft a line letting them know that it's the only brand we use.  They responded by sending me a nice thank-you letter in the mail and attaching some $.55/1 coupons.  These coupons are good for any size pack as opposed to the coupons they make available on their website for $.50/1 for six roll or larger packs.
Why is this important?  Well, Angel Soft goes on sale somewhat regularly at $1 for a 4-roll pack (and, actually, is on sale for that price next week).  With the $.55/1 coupons for ANY pack doubling, that means free toilet paper!  The savings on a 6-roll pack is great, but you just can't beat free.

And you just can't beat free surprises, either.
I was sitting at the computer this afternoon when I was startled by a loud "thunk" and a knock on the front door.  I got up and went to see what was going on, and as I passed by the living room window I saw the UPS truck parked out front.  I wasn't expecting anything, but when I opened the door there was a box on the doorstep addressed to me.  A present??  I like presents!  And this was fairly heavy present at that!

I tore open the box and tried to make sense of what was inside.

Three pounds of licorice???

And then I remembered I had emailed Red Vines a few weeks ago hoping to land a coupon or two.  They did a little better than that, though!  They UPS'd me three one pound bags of delicious red licorice and a thank-you note for my compliment to them - WHOA!!  Talk about landing a customer for life!

I'm really wishing I wasn't still full from lunch.
